The Journey of Writing My First Novel
Writing a novel had always been a dream of mine, but turning that dream into reality was a journey filled with discovery, challenges, and moments of deep personal reflection. When The Road Narrows, my debut novel, is set to be published in 2025 by Spectrum Books LTD in London, and the path to getting here has been nothing short of transformative.
Inspiration and the First Spark
The idea for When The Road Narrows came from a desire to explore themes of identity, self-acceptance, and resilience. Set against the backdrop of 1980s conservatism and the emerging AIDS crisis, the story follows Nick, a young man torn between the expectations of his traditional Catholic upbringing and the reality of his emerging sexuality. I wanted to tell a story that felt deeply personal but also universal—one that resonated with anyone who has ever struggled to reconcile their true self with societal or familial expectations.
The Writing Process: From Concept to Manuscript
Like many first-time novelists, I began with an outline, only to have the characters take on a life of their own. Nick, Philippe, and Alex evolved in ways I hadn’t initially planned, making the process both exciting and unpredictable. There were days when the words flowed effortlessly, and others when I questioned everything about the story. But through it all, I remained committed to the core message: authenticity and courage in the face of adversity.
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring historical accuracy. The 1980s were a defining era, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals, and I wanted to capture the nuances of that time—both the fear and the fierce determination to live openly and freely. Researching the cultural and political landscape of the period helped shape the novel’s setting and conflicts, making it feel both real and immersive.
Revisions and Refinement
Once I had a complete draft, the real work began. Editing was a painstaking yet rewarding process. I sought feedback from trusted readers, revisited key scenes, and made adjustments to enhance the emotional depth and character development.
I also paid close attention to my writing style, eliminating overused words and refining passages for clarity and impact. Every sentence became an opportunity to enhance the reader’s connection to Nick’s journey.
Finding a Publisher
As any writer knows, finishing a book is just the beginning. The road to publication is its own challenge, filled with queries, submissions, and, inevitably, rejections. But persistence paid off. When Spectrum Books LTD, a premier LGBTQ+ publisher, expressed interest, I knew When The Road Narrows had found the right home. Their passion for amplifying diverse voices made them the perfect partner for bringing Nick’s story to the world.
What I Learned Along the Way
Writing When The Road Narrows taught me so much—not just about storytelling, but about resilience, patience, and the power of staying true to one’s vision. I learned that writing is as much about discovery as it is about discipline. I learned to trust my instincts, to embrace constructive criticism, and, most importantly, to believe in the story I was telling.
As I prepare for the book’s release, I find myself reflecting on the journey that brought me here. Writing this novel has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I hope it resonates with readers who see parts of themselves in Nick’s story.
To aspiring writers, my advice is this: start where you are, write the story that only you can tell, and don’t be afraid of the challenges along the way. The road may narrow, but if you keep going, it will lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.
